Paintings & Sculptures
About Alice
Alice is an architectural designer by trade, and therefore enjoys working with geometry and often quite regulated shapes. The grids of her large paintings lean towards this background - she has even been known to pull out a ruler while working on her sculptures!

A course at Unitec in Auckland about 20 years ago, run by Christine Hellyer entitled "Art in the Landscape", opened Alice's eyes to sculptural forms she was unaware of. While she enjoys the scale of large pieces she now increasingly has to be practical regarding their weight. She now keeps sculptures to a weight that only needs two people to lift into a car.

Alice only started painting ten years ago. She was inspired by some of Ralph Hotere's large works in the Gore Art Gallery. Ever resourceful, Alice started with black building paper, acrylics and a set of stencils she had recovered from a woolshed. She got busy painting her favourite quotes and creating crosswords around a theme. This led to some commissions using themes of interest to clients.

Alice has been involved in several sculpture symposiums at Matakana in North Auckland, and has exhibited in Warkworth and then at Pigeon Bay and Akaroa, Banks Peninsula. She was the Artist in Residence at the Captain's Quarter Gallery, Akaroa in February 2025.

Alice resides in the beautiful Diamond Harbour near Christchurch and welcomes visitors to her home to view her works.
